Estrella
Morena
Known world-wide among the aficionados of
flamenco, Estrella Morena de Madrid made her debut as
a dancer in the famous tablao Los Canasteros of Manolo
Caracol. At the age of 16 she became a soloist at the
tablao Torres Bermeja and shortly thereafter debut as
primera bailarina at the Teatro de la Zarzuela of Madrid.
She was later featured at the tablao Duende for two
years. She then came to New York where she met the great
Antonio, auditioned and was contracted for four years
as featured dancer and returned to Madrid. During those
four years, she toured Europe and Asia with great success.
She was then invited to join Rafael de Córdoba
with whom she continued to tour.
She was featured on television in Spain and Japan and
did the movie version of Rafael de Cordoba’s rendition
of El Amor Brujo. Estrella Morena then formed her own
company which toured parts of Spain and was contracted
by the Hilton in Manila where they gained much success.
She later returned to New York where she performed for
the King and Queen of Spain at the Hotel Pier.
She continued to perform in New York at venues such
as the Carnegie Recital Hall, Hunter College, Instituto
Español, Circulo Cultural de la Casa de España,
The Barbizon Plaza Theater, and the Town Hall. She toured
all over the United States and Canada with the famous
Jose Greco as a special guest artist. She later moved
to Miami with her husband Pepe de Málaga and
her son Jose Moreno, since then she has been a featured
dancer at the tablao Costa Vasca.
In July of 1990 she decided to establish her own dance
academy Escuela de Flamenco Estrella Morena for aficionados
and professionals, adults and children, teaching Flamenco,
Classical Spanish Dance and Regional Dances of Spain.
Her goal is to share with everyone who is interested
the richness of the dances of Spain, thereby creating
new values.
Most recently, in 2001, she completed a three-concert
series at the Lincoln Theater in Miami Beach with the
New World Symphony and the great flamenco singer Carmen
Linares.
